Welcome Post

Hi, guys. We're glad to see you've made it to the seventy fourth annual...oh, this isn't the Hunger Games? Alright. Welcome, welcome to bigtimebang! We're glad you came! ♥ That kind of rhymes! Ahem. To the best of our knowledge, this is the very first Big Bang meant solely for the BTR fandom, and we're super excited to see how it turns out. We're hoping for plenty of writers, artists, and beta-readers to sign up and make our inagural run a big time success. Sign Ups for writers will begin tomorrow, April 17th, 2012. See you there!

1. And a Big Bang is…what exactly?

A Big Bang is a challenge in which fandom comes together in celebration of the beloved long!fic. Writers pen the stories they love and are later accompanied by artists who collaborate with them to produce, you guessed it, a Big Bang. All of which is done within a designated time period. Yup, there are deadlines, people. If you'd like to learn more about the origins of Big Bangs, here's a helpful link.

2. Who can participate?

3. What’s the minimum word count?

15,000 words. Yes, this is less than a normal Big Bang. No, this is not us passing judgment on anyone’s attention span. Mostly.

4. What's the maximum word count?

The sky's the limit here. Let your creative juices flow!

5. Do song lyrics or poems count as a part of my word count?

Only if you've written them. You're allowed to use songs or poems from the real world, but your actual word count can only consist of original material.

6. Are there prompts?

Nope. Run wild, run free. Your story is yours, original and avant-garde.

7. What can I write about?

ANYTHING! Any genre, any ship, any rating, as long as it features at least one of the characters or real life members of Big Time Rush.

8. I already started a story that would be perfect for this. Can I submit that?

Yes, but there are restrictions. You may not submit any piece of fiction or art that has previously been posted anywhere online.

9. Can the story be a prequel/sequel to an already existing story?

10. Does the story have to be slash? Does it have to be pairing centric? Are there any genre requirements? Rating requirements? No. No. No. No. Write an AU! Write a crossover! Write the odysssey of James Diamond, finding true love with a potted palm while on vacation in Mexico!

11. Can I write more than one story or post more than one piece of art? Can I do both?

Sure, bro. It's a free country up in here; writers can create art, artists can write, writers can do two (or more) stories, artists can do more than one piece, etc. One point of advice, though: If you commit to more than one story, you best make sure it's a commitment you can keep. There will be multiple progress check-ins, so just make sure you're prepared for the workload.

12. What deadlines should I know about?

Writer Sign Ups – close May 17
Artist Sign Ups – close June 1
Beta Sign Ups – close June 1
Check In for Writers - June 15 (this is when we'll ask for your story summaries)
Artist/Beta Assignments- July 1
Check In for Artists/Writers – August 1 (when we'll want a rough draft. NOT a complete draft, but at least a skeleton)
Deadline- September 1

13. What happens if I can’t make the deadline?

Contact the mods. IMMEDIATELY.

14. What happens if I disappear off the face of the earth?

If you decide to flake without notifying the mods, there is a large possibility that your assigned writer/artist/beta may end up hating you. The mods will be super understanding while they secretly hope that you get eaten by a shark. We're sweet like that.

15. LJ is the spawn of Satan. Do I need one to participate?

No. But it will make your life a whole hell of a lot easier. If you want to participate, but you don't have a LiveJournal, please contact the mods.

16. Where can I post my work?

Anywhere! Fanfiction.net, Archive of Our Own, Deviantart, Tumblr, etc. They're all fine. However, you have to provide a link at the [info]bigtimebang comm, or, if you don't have an LJ, you can contact the mods to do it for you. If you do post on an alternate site, you must create a link back to the Big Time Bang community somewhere within your post. If you don't know how to do that, you can contact the mods for assistence.

17. What is a beta, and does my story really need one?

A beta is a proofreader, and oftentimes a cheerleader. They will read over your fic and give constructive feedback in regards to spelling, grammar, and content. A good beta will also offer encouragement and support. No one is perf, everyone needs a beta!

18. What if no one volunteers to beta for me?

There will be beta sign ups at the halfway point where prospective proofreaders can pick the story they'd like to read and edit based on anonymously submitted story summaries. It's first come first serve, so if you see a summary that catches your eye, jump on it! Now, if no one volunteers to be your beta? Hey, no worries. We the mods will gladly take on the privilege of  proofreading. Believe us, we're more excited about your fic than you are! And I'll tell you a secret: we're the best cheerleaders around.

19. Do I get to choose which artist/writer I work with? Writers, no. Artists, yes. The reason for this is that it's the writer's responsibility to write their fic based on the whims of their own muse. It's the artist's responsibility to pick a story that will become their muse. The outcome? Everyone is originally inspired and there is no fighting over artists/authors. The author summaries will be submitted anonymously, so artists will choose based on the fic description alone.

20. What qualifies as art?

Art can include illustrations, fanmixes, fanvids, and photo manips. The only requirement is that you put a reasonable amount of effort into the piece. You can't, for instance, take a picture of Kendall Schmidt and run it through instagram.

21. May I f-lock my Big Bang submission?

If you must friends-lock your submission, you have to post and lock it directly to the Big Time Bang community. If you lock it solely to your personal journal, it will not count as a valid submission.

22. Where can I find out more about the Big Time Rush fandom?

Try bigtimerush, palmwoods, btr_funhouse, btrfuntime, and the BTR sections of fanfiction.net, arichiveofourown.org, or tumblr.com.

23. Who are the mods?

Hi! There are three of us; garnetice, breila_rose, and jblostfan16. If you have any problems and/or questions, feel free to message us. We're nice, and only one...or two...of us bites.

Ahh if only I knew about this beforehand! The AU I'm currently working on is perfect for this but I've already posted parts of it and I can't write another due to time limits.

I'm still SUPER excited for this either way since big bangs bring the most wonderful of fics. Maybe I'll participate, maybe not... Fantastic idea though :)

Hey sorry to bug you again but is there any specific reason that thilia's icons haven't been approved as a post? It's been in queue since Friday. :(

To the best of my knowledge, nothing's been submitted, but I'll check with the other mods to see if they know anything about it.

Kk, we found it. One of the other mods had it queued.

Did the word count change? I swear it used to be 10K instead of 15K
Mellysquoctobird on May 18th, 2012 03:18 pm (UTC)
Never mind. I got it confused with another big bang I was interested in.

Just have a quick question for you guys. Now it says the writing can be a prequel/sequel to an existing fic and we can do more than one, but I just want to be sure that this will follow under it. I already have one new idea I'm working on, but I also have an existing fic I am doing. Could I pick up where I am on my existing fic and use that as a submission? Actually I would do a little bit more for it and keep writing it until the two parts meet...if any of that makes sense. >.< *scrambled brain* I just want to make sure before I put in a lot of effort on both when I only needed to with one.
Whispers in clouds of purple and greyfairygrrl45 on May 29th, 2012 03:43 pm (UTC)
Not a mod but may be able to answer this for you as I am a bigbang participant. Have you posted any of the existing fic online yet? If not you're fine.
Nicole CloseNicole Close on May 29th, 2012 04:09 pm (UTC)
I did. That's why I wanted to make sure since it really depends how you interpret the rules so I just needed a second opinion. Thanks! :3
Whispers in clouds of purple and greyfairygrrl45 on May 29th, 2012 04:42 pm (UTC)
Awwwww...yeah. if you did then no dice....can't submit it. Sorry love. And no problem!
SnapCracklePop: BTR: Logangarnetice on May 29th, 2012 06:06 pm (UTC)
I'm a little unclear on this question. Are you asking if you can submit later chapters of the existing fic? Because if so, fairygrrl45's right, we won't be able to count that as a submission. If you end the existing fic and submit a sequel in the same world, that's totally acceptable.
Nicole CloseNicole Close on May 29th, 2012 06:30 pm (UTC)
That was exactly it. Sorry for not being clear about it. It just means I have more time to work on the new one. :3 Thank you.

I have a question about the Artist/Beta assignments on July 1st. Do you already know a particular time when the summaries will be published? I'm just asking, because I want to know beforehand if I have to stay up late due to the time difference:) Don't want to be late for claiming a story.
SnapCracklePop: BTR: Dimples Smirkgarnetice on June 28th, 2012 02:47 am (UTC)
Uhhhh I'm going to try to post it around midnight, but I'm not one hundred percent sure yet. I'll let you know if I choose a different time. :)
deadpetsparkydeadpetsparky on June 28th, 2012 11:40 am (UTC)
thank you for letting me know:)

So... crossovers? My fic is kind of a crossover (set in the universe of another musical group's music video) and they kind of come in contact with the group but the main focus is BTR.
SnapCracklePop: BTR: Boys Say Coolgarnetice on June 28th, 2012 02:45 am (UTC)
Crossovers are cool, as long as someone from BTR is the main character. :)

How is the whole "writer check in" thing going to work? Are we going to have to email the mods or will our beta hold us accountable or what?
SnapCracklePopgarnetice on July 26th, 2012 11:21 pm (UTC)
You can email it to us, or PM it if you prefer.
